“But it is one thing to read about dragons and another to meet them.”

For thousands of years, people have brought mythic creatures to life through art, stories and songs. Discover how real animals such as dinosaurs, mammoths and narwhals may have stirred tales of griffins, giants and unicorns. Learn why so many legendary water spirits look like mermaids. Touch fossils, explore winged mythological creatures, build your own dragon and come face to face with a giant legendary sea monster.

You’ll be enchanted by The Academy of Natural Sciences‘ new exhibit: “Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, & Mermaids,” on it’s opening weekend February 16-18!  The museum’s hours are 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. during weekends and Holidays. Tickets are $22.95* for adults and $18.95* for children, who are non-members. You can purchase your tickets for the opening weekend on the academy’s website.

Learn the history of your favorite cryptic beasts and the real animals that influenced their stories. Observe a Kraken dissection, get up close and personal with sea monkeys and create your own unicorn poop soap slime!

Here are a list of events during the opening weekend:

Auditorium Show: Legendary Live Animals
11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

From fire-breathing dragons to talon-ted beasts, come meet some legendary live animals that your favorite mythos is based on!

Magical Myths

Where did the story of Bigfoot come from? How did the narwhal stir tales of the unicorn? Check out specimens from our famous research collection, and chat with Academy educators to learn about the real animals that inspired the legends you love.

Kraken Dissection

Watch as we release the kraken onto our dissection table and learn about the anatomy of the cephalopod. Write using real kraken ink, and ask questions about these creatures lurking beneath the water’s surface.

Unicorn Poop Soap Slime

Have you ever encountered a real unicorn? Perhaps not, but you can get your hands on some unicorn poop soap slime, perfect for those days that you want to feel extra magical.

Sea Monkey Cart

Come check out our bowlful of happiness as we dive into the world of sea monkeys. Are they real? Are they monkeys? Find out at our interactive tech car.

If you are unable to attend the opening weekend, don’t worry; the exhibit is open until June 9, 2019! Summon your friends and family and checkout Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaid during it’s opening weekend February 16-18!
