Prepare for the Skywalker saga conclusion in 2019.
Lucasfilm announced that production is slated to being on Star Wars: Episode IX, the final in the new saga, on August 1, 2018 in London this week and along with the production announcement we also got a look at who/what character will be returning for the film.
Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson (thank god!), Kelly Marie Tran (YAY!), Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd will all be returning for IX. The returning cast will be joined by newcomers, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, and Keri Russell.
It was also announced that “veteran Star Wars actors” Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams will be making appearances in the film.
We can all now try to come up with as many theories on how Hamill’s Luke Skywalker will return. I do like the theory that Luke did not die he just transcended.
Though the real surprising casting news we learned today was that Carrie Fisher will be reprising her role of General Leia Organa in Episode IX. StarWars.com stated that the film will use unreleased footage of Fisher from The Force Awakens. Director and writer of IX, J.J. Abrams, had this to say about the inclusion of Fisher in the film:
We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.
Like most fans, I did truly think that The Last Jedi was the last time I would be seeing Leia on screen and it broke my heart. I can now only hope that we get a powerful (but not corny) conclusion to Leia’s storyline that is fitting to not only a Princess but a General. Looks like I will be packing tissues for this one again!
Star Wars: Episode IX is slated for a December 2019 release!
