“As long as you have hope, you’re still in the game.”
It may technically not be a book anyone asked for but it is a book we need right now. Filled with witty quotes, celebrity name dropping, mystery, and cries for Uncle Joe to run in 2020 – Hope Never Dies by Andrew Shaffer – has a little something for everyone looking to escape the current news cycle this summer.
Civilian life is not for everyone, so when Joe finds out that a beloved Amtrak conductor dies in a train accident, he is going to get to the bottom of what really happened to his friend. Joining Joe on the tour of Wilmington Delaware is none other than Barack Obama! But if you think that these two are as close as they were when they worked together at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave you are wrong! Sure the main mystery of the book is what truly happened to Amtrak conductor, Finn Donnelly, but that storyline almost plays second fiddle to whether or not Obama and Biden can become besties once again.
While the Obama/Biden dynamic is the most intriguing component of the book – take the two of them away not sure the murder mystery storyline would hold on it’s own but we don’t really have to think about that too much – the evil green monster bites Joe hard and his angst (which includes hanging a photo of Bradley Cooper on a dart board cause he was seen hanging out with Barack) is just a bit too much! There is a moment around page 233 where Joe and Barack got in a little fight and I got so annoyed with Joe that I had to put the book down.
But how could you stay made at Joe? You can’t!
The two – spoiler alert – solve the mystery and prove to be strong together (political pun!), hope is really the main theme. And where is the hope directed? To Joe Biden running for office in 2020. It is literally mentioned a handful of the times through out the book and is even the reason why Obama distances himself from Joe. It is hard when reading this book not to get wrapped up in the idea and start becoming hopeful that Joe will head to Wilmington Amtrak station and announce his campaign but then you remember that this is a work of fiction and not an actual account of how Joe feels and you deflate a little!
Hope Never Dies is pure enjoyment from start to finish, an easy page-turner that you can take with you on vacation this summer or commuting on the train to work, with dramatized version of Obama and Biden you can easily fall in love with, and the book will leave you hoping that Shaffer will write a spin-off featuring scene stealer, Secret Service Steve!
Though I don’t think anything I write could possibility motivate you to buy this book more than this epic book trailer…
