Breathe. This trailer is definitely heavy but extremely important.
Based on the best-selling YA novel, The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, the movie focuses on the frustration, the turmoil, and the fear of the black community during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The story centers on Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), a young black girl who hails from a mostly poor and black neighborhood but attends a rich, and mainly white prep school. For the most part, she’s just a normal teenage girl that loves her friends and tries to make the best of both worlds. But once she is witness to the death of her best friend Khalil at the hands of a white cop, her whole world changes. Because of the great injustice that was done to her best friend and her community, she can’t simply just mourn, especially when half of her world doesn’t understand the same fear. Starr decides to use her voice to bring justice for Khalil despite all the harassment she receives.
Thomas wrote the novel after seeing the cases of Trayvon Martin, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, and Sandra Bland. She wanted to spotlight these stories while also giving a voice to black girls in YA amid a sea of novels about white teenagers.
The Hate U Give was directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Regina Hall, Anthony Mackie, KJ Apa, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Issa Rae, Lamar Johnson, and Common.
The Hate U Give opens in theaters on October 19, 2018.
