‘Annihilation’ Trailer is Pretty Ominous and Mesmerizing at the Same Time

A new trailer dropped today for Annihilation and it amps up the wonder and uneasy feelings. Ex Machina director Alex Garland is bringing the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy to ominous life.

Natalie Portman plays the Biologist and the trailer opens up with the Scientist (Benedict Wong) asking her to explain everything that happened. We go back to the beginning where we find out that Portman’s husband (Oscar Isaac) volunteered to go into the “Shimmer” for reconnaissance despite knowing that no one and nothing ever comes back. Isaac is the first case of someone returning but he’s extremely ill and no one knows how to cure him. Portman realizes it’s up to her to save her husband.

An all-female team is put together to retrace Isaac and his teams step to figure out what happened. That team is made up of the Surveyor (Tessa Thompson), the Psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), and the Paramedic (Gina Rodriguez). I’ve never read the book so I’m not sure if there is a specific reason that the team is all women or if the writer just decided it would be better that way. But I like it and I especially love the actresses picked to be part of this team.

The team discovers that the “shimmer” is expanding and that everything within the confines of the “shimmer” is mutating the plants and the animals. This includes deer with floral antlers, a crocodile with shark teeth, and some other terrifying creature that creeps on Portman. They also discover a tape of Isaac and his team that hints at the team going crazy due to the “shimmer” or being murdered by mutated creatures.

When someone suggests that the “shimmer” is destroying everything, Portman replies, “It’s not destroying… It’s making something new.”

But is that new, good or bad? I’m assuming bad by the state of things.

Annihilation shimmies into theaters on February 28.
