Now we will all “Remember, remember the fifth of November…”
Over here in the states, we have a vague knowledge of the 1605 plot to blow up Parliament killing King James I and the House of Lords thanks to the beloved film, V For Vendetta. But that is all about to change thanks to the new HBO miniseries (originally released in the UK on BBC One) Gunpowder starring
Jon Snow Kit Harington!
The three-part series will depict the events leading up to November 5th or better known as Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night in the UK. This week HBO released the first trailer for the series, check it out below…
One thing I may love more than Kit Harington is an English historical drama – I mean, they ruled a damn empire but television and films make it seem like they could barely keep their shit together!
Anywho, Harington plays Robert Catesby, a devoted Catholic “who was the driving force behind the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 London,” but it is not called “Robert Catesby Night.” Though Catesby seemed to be the brain behind the operation, Fawkes gets much of the credit for the Gunpowder Plot. Always a bridesmaid, right Catesby?
Here is the official synopsis for the show:
Gunpowder, a three-part thriller based on the 17th century events that led to Guy Fawkes Day, is coming to HBO. The miniseries, written by Ronan Bennet (Top Boy) and directed by J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as Robert Catesby, who was the driving force behind the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 London.
The story focuses on Catesby, a committed Catholic at a time when Protestant England persecuted Catholics relentlessly, as his refusal to abandon his religion brings him to the edge of financial, social and psychological ruin. Mark Gatiss (Game of Thrones, Sherlock) plays Robert Cecil, King James’ spymaster, who directs efforts to hunt down, torture and kill priests, while rank-and-file Catholics are subject to oppression and the loss of their property.
The miniseries chronicles the evolution of the plot, the selection of collaborators to carry it out, the gathering of resources and the obstacles to its execution — as Catesby’s team plays a deadly cat and mouse game with Cecil’s ruthless spy network.
Gunpowder also stars Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss, Liv Tyler, and Derek Riddell.
So will you be watching Gunpowder? Now when you make your November 5th Facebook status you will actually know what you are referencing – YAY education! Also, remember we still HAVE NO IDEA when Game of Thrones is returning so this might be your chance to catch Kit on the small screen!
Gunpowder debuts on HBO Monday, December 18 at 10 PM. Part Two will air on Tuesday, December 19 at 10 PM and Part Three will air on Wednesday, December 20 at 10 PM.
