The Galaxy Far Far Away is not going away anytime soon!
Disney announced earlier this week that they have signed a deal with The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, to develop a new Star Wars trilogy. On top of that exciting news, Disney also announced that they are planning on creating a live-action Star Wars TV series that will air exclusively on their streaming service launching in 2019. From what we can tell, because not a lot has been offered – cause hello STAR WARS – these are two different projects!
Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, had this to say about continuing collaborating with Johnson:
We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
Lucasfilm also stated that Johnson’s new Star Wars project will be “separate from the episodic Skywalker saga.” Which make sense since one could only assume that J.J. Abrams’ Episode IX will wrap up the Skywalker saga leaving us to explore much more of the galaxy.
At this time we can only assume cause we don’t know shit – but we will keep you posted!
We can also assume that the new trilogy will not hit until 2021 based off the current Star Wars timeline with Episode IX hitting theater in 2019, another Star Wars stand-alone film (Rogue One, Solo style) slatted for for 2020.
Star War news was not the only thing announced this week. It would seem that Disney is also planning on developing series adaptations of Monsters Inc., High School Musical, and other Marvel original works. Now I know what you are thinking, another streaming service I have to pay for! Disney has stated that their service will be priced below other streaming platforms since there will be less content.
