I guess the list of directors to turn to for Star Wars was pretty short because J.J. Abrams (Force Awakens) is returning to direct Star Wars: Episode IX.

To be fair, I’m sure Disney was feeling the pressure to keep the ball rolling with the next film and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy wanted to save a headache and go with someone they could trust. BUT, it would have been nice to see someone else take the reigns, especially a woman. One day a Star Wars film will have a female director. The force will be with me on that.
Colin Trevorrow was originally attached but left over creative differences. Disney has had issues with directors for the Han Solo movie as well (Ron Howard is currently attached), so they seem to have a strong idea of what they want and don’t want to deviate from that.
Abrams will not only be directing but lend his hand to co-writing the film with Chris Terrio.
Let’s hope Abrams can still charm and transport us to a galaxy, far, far, away.
