Meet the ensemble cast that will work with Squirrel Girl for Marvel’s first live-action scripted comedy, New Warriors!
It was back in April that we learned that Freeform greenlit the straight-to-series, Marvel’s New Warriors which will be lead by the one and only Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl. The 10-episode series will center around six young “super” people who will work together to help make a difference and protect the world. And now we know who those six people are!
New Warriors will be lead by Squirrel Girl played by Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us, AT&T Lady) and Mister Immortal played by Derek Theler (Baby Daddy). Joining the duo are Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.
Here are full character descriptions via Marvel via The Hollywood Reporter:
Vayntrub will take on Doreen Green — aka Squirrel Girl. Doreen is a totally empowered fangirl who has the incredible powers of a … squirrel. Her greatest quality is her optimism and her best friend is a pet squirrel, Tippy Toe. Vayntrub is repped by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.
Theler, is Craig Hollis, aka Mister Immortal. Craig can’t die … or so he says. Although Craig’s superpower seems amazing, he hasn’t made use of it at all — he figures if he has all the time in the world to learn how to do anything heroic, what’s the rush? Theler is with Paradigm, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Sloane Offer.
Tardy (Dear White People) takes on the role of Dwayne Taylor, aka Night Thrasher. Brilliant and noble and maybe a bit full of himself, Dwayne is a shameless self-promoter and entrepreneur who also deeply believes in justice. Tardy is with the Kohner Agency and Generate.
Worthy (Austin & Ally, Cassandra French’s Finishing School) will play Robbie Baldwin, aka Speedball. Robbie is an impulsive people-pleaser with a misplaced sense of confidence who throws kinetic balls of energy that are completely out of control. Worthy is repped by CTM International, Principato Young and Myman Greenspan.
Moy (2 Broke Girls) will take on the role of Zack Smith, aka Microbe. Zack is a shy hypochondriac who has the ability to talk to germs, which can tell him where you’ve been, what you ate and who you hung out with. It’s impossible to keep secrets around him.
Comer (The Comeback) rounds out the cast as Deborah Fields, aka Debrii. Deborah is proud, funny and quick witted. Confidently out as a lesbian, Deborah is a low-level telekinetic — very low. Like, she-can-move-a-paper-cup low. Comer is with Esteemed Artists Talent and CESD.
The series showrunner, Kevin Biegel, had this to say about the casting and series:
I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them.
Marvel’s head of TV Jeph Loeb will act as executive producer along with Jim Chory. The series is slated to launch in 2018 and is Freeform’s second title from Marvel. Cloak and Dagger is also slated to hit TV screens in 2018.
Okay, now that we have all the official business let’s chat about this casting!
Now I am not sure if this is due to the fact that when the news of this show came out I recently finished reading The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Meets World where Doreen is a young teenager which lead me to believe that the New Warriors was going to be a group of teenagers banning together to help protect mankind. I was also hoping that Squirrel Girl would be teaming up with Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan but I guess a girl can keep dreaming about a live-action Ms. Marvel (maybe I should dream bigger like a movie – I will not hold my breath for too long tho since that could be years and I like living). So I was a bit surprised when I learned today that these “six young people” were more like young twenty-somethings. See what happens when one assumes?
The initial thought regarding this casting was that Freeform and Marvel were setting out to make a funny version – well less dramatic and dark – of Marvel’s The Defenders. Which I totally get and I am down for.
So now that we have processed the above information, we can talk about the actual casting.
Now at this point we all know that everyone (well mostly Marvel geeks) has an option on who should be Squirrel Girl. The strongest campaign out there was for Shannon Purser (aka Barb from Stranger Things), and Mae Whitman was in the mix. A lot of people have been dreaming of Anna Kendrick playing Squirrel Girl and sure that probably would totally happen if this was a feature film and not a TV series (side note: I pray that Marvel does try to take characters from the Marvel TV world and place them in the MCU and not do film recasting like DC cause that shit is stupid, you already have The Flash!).
Not going to lie I was a little taken back by the casting Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl but the more and more I saw other articles with Vayntrub face next to Squirrel Girl I got it. I mean, I do not know much about her acting career but in terms of fitting the part, yea they nailed it.
I am also not going to sit here and talk about the other characters because I know little about the superheroes. I will give props to hiring a diverse cast of new talent.
Freeform is really packing on the ensemble cast series with New Warriors, Shadowhunters, the reboot (or is it just a remake?) of Misfits, etc and I am looking forward to see what 2018 brings us!
So what do you think about the casting?
New Warriors is slated for a 2018 release.
