Aparecium, young Dumbledore! Warner Bros. revealed the actor that will be portraying the younger version of beloved Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. It is none other than Jude Law!
…yeah, we understand if you need a minute. I didn’t really have anyone that I thought could pull off a young Dumbledore (he just seemed permanently aged with wisdom to me, you know?) but if someone were to ask, my top five choices probably wouldn’t have included Jude Law. Maybe it’s due to his latest high profile role that has me a little wary of him taking on the robes of one of the greatest wizards.
The Young Pope definitely proves can pull off the robed look but he plays a pervy and sadistic religious man, which is a major downside. Now I know Dumbledore had a dark past but I don’t think it comes close to the young pope shenanigans. Law can also be seen in the trailers for the upcoming movie King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, where he seems to be portraying another asshole.
BUT in all fairness to Law, I pulled up his IMDb page to see his other roles. I completely forgot he was Watson in Sherlock Holmes! Smarts and charm! And he was hilarious in Spy.
So maybe Law can completely surprise me as Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2. And maybe he’ll have amazing sexual chemistry with Johnny Depp.
David Yates had the following to say to about the casting of Jude Law:
“Jude Law is a phenomenally talented actor whose work I have long admired, and I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to work with him,” Yates said. “I know he will brilliantly capture all the unexpected facets of Albus Dumbledore as J.K. Rowling reveals this very different time in his life.”
Production will start this summer on the film and Albus Dumbledore will only be a Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts, not yet taking over the reigns of the school.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2 is slated to hit theaters November 16, 2018.
