Season 7 | Episode 14 | “Aquaticism”
Season 7 | Episode 15 | “Ain’t Miss Debatin’s”
Welcome, Bob’s Burgers fans, to the weekly post where a member of the Belcher family or supporting character (looking at you Teddy and Jimmy Jr.) is crowned the Extra-Rare Performer of the Week! Hardcore fans of the animated sitcom know that there’s always one breakout, standout character in every Bob’s Burgers episode to celebrate!
I promise that it won’t be Tina Belcher each week but, I mean, she is kind of everyone’s spirit animal.
Note: this weekly post originated on EW Community but now has a new home here at AGtM. Click here to see the extra-rare performers from season six.
So this past Sunday we got two servings of Bob’s Burgers, I know in the past I complained that two back-to-back Bob’s really grinds my gears because you end up loving on episode over another but these two episodes are equally wonderful! So there I was wrong — it happens every once in awhile! So any who…
A brief summary of what went down in this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, “Aquaticism.”
The Blecher children, especially Tina, have a real soft spot for the local aquarium on the pier and often visit the joint — which is pretty much a touch tank and a keychain shop. Though one ill-fated afternoon, Judy the owner, informs the kids that she will be closing down shop since she cannot pay taxes. So duh, through the power of the internet the Belcher children — mostly Louise — realize that if you are a place of worship aka a church you don’t have to pay taxes! All you have to do is fill out a special form and submit to the IRS which they get Judy to do. Though surprising everyone, an IRS agent will be stopping by to examine the church!
Meanwhile back at the restaurant, Bob is bewildered by the fact that Linda gets more tips than him and he is simply Linda is just more charming. Through a course of different skills Bob can try to become a welcoming human being — he kinda fails at all of them. Linda being the loving wife she is, tricks Bob by dropping a ten dollar bill on a table, leaving Bob to believe he is getting better. Now that I am thinking about this it is nice but it is also a lie…oh well who am I to judge their marriage!
Now the Belcher children and Judy have to make the aquarium look like a church for at least one afternoon for IRS Agent Flanley. Which they do accomplish and after a typical inspiringly awkward speech by Tina, it was about the beauty of the sea cucumber. Agent Flanley became very interested in the church. So much that he is planning on attending the singles mixer happening the next day that is posted on the church’s activity board. So NOW they have to pull together a singles mixer and make the place look like a church…again!
So the kids were able to get Linda, Bob, Teddy, Mort, and Gretchen to attend the mixer. Judy and Flanley were mixing it up and getting along great. During the mixer Flanley showed that he was so interested in the church he was ready to become a member! So Flanley stripped down to his underwear and submerges himself into the jellyfish tank — which is what Louise told Flanley how you become a member. It is in that moment the whole group lets Flanley know that they are a sham!
The real sham though was what Judy and Agent Flanley both thought they had a blossoming relationship! The Belcher kids were able to smooth over things and bring Judy and Flanley together! Oh and Judy is being sued for tax fraud so love and no jail time!
And now a brief summary of “Ain’t Miss Debatin’s.”
Henry Haber approaches Tina during lunch one day to recruit her to join the debate team since it is a rule to have at least one girl on the team and the previous chick left to focus on the spelling bee. Tina at first was reluctant to join because she feels like her on-off again thing with Jimmy Jr. maybe on again but it turns out Jimmy Jr. was flirting with another girl! So now Tina is wearing a blue blazer and on the debate team.
Now that Tina has an afternoon activity, Louise and Gene are in the market for something to do. After Bob drops a bunch of raw meat on the floor, Louise asks if they can play with it — yes, totally normal! Louise then builds a man out of the meat and takes a photo of him with Linda’s phone, realizing that they can now make a stop-motion film about Meat Man! Now this is an afternoon activity Louise and Gene can give their all!
Tina is having a hard time understanding that for debate team you sometimes have to be on a side that you don’t personally agree with. Henry then begins to work with Tina to help her harvest her anger — Henry uses how upset he is by the fact that Firefly was canceled — it takes a bit but her anger comes from Jimmy Jr. Once Tina hits that wall she is unstoppable at that podium. Henry falls hard for Tina and since Tina does not have a reason not to date Henry — besides the fact that she is not attracted to him at all — they become official boyfriend and girlfriend!
Meanwhile, Louise, Gene and now Linda, Bob, and Teddy are working on the greatest movie ever — the Tale of Meat Man! There is action, adventure, romance, and a grand finale! Which is almost derailed by the always miserable Hugo but after being promised a credit in the film the finale goes off. What is this grand finale you may ask, well it is blowing up Meat Man of course! After some editing magic, Louise shows the film to her family and Bob tears up — yes, it would seem that Bob Belcher may have just identified with Meat Man.
So Tina is continuing to live a lie and kill it on the debate team. Though shit is about to go down when Team Wagstaff is slated to compete against Team King’s Head Island lead by Sasha. Sasha soon realizes that Tina has a stuff spot for Aussie or many New Zealand-ie (I can’t remember which one) King’s Head Island team member, Duncan. Tina can not resist Duncan with his accent, long neck, and he has a butt and ends up kissing him on the beach! Of course, this all comes back to bite her in the ass during the debate. Tina may have upset Henry’s heart (I think broke is a strong word) but she was still able to win the debate and smooth things over with her now ex-boyfriend. Tina Belcher, always a heartbreaker and a winner! Get it, girl!
And now, the Extra-Rare Performer of the Week is: Meat Man
Meat Man, just you everyday burger guy. With his angelic eyes and his welcoming smile, he became the movie star that people dreamed of. He put his heart and soul into his performance and ended up having his life imitate his art.
Thank you Meat Man for being a Meat Man…
Until next time, stay fresh Bob’s Burgers fans!
