Season 7 | Episode 12 | “Like Gene for Chocolate”

Welcome, Bob’s Burgers fans, to the weekly post where a member of the Belcher family or supporting character (looking at you Teddy and Jimmy Jr.) is crowned the Extra-Rare Performer of the Week! Hardcore fans of the animated sitcom know that there’s always one breakout, standout character in every Bob’s Burgers episode to celebrate!

I promise that it won’t be Tina Belcher each week but, I mean, she is kind of everyone’s spirit animal.

Note: this weekly post originated on EW Community but now has a new home here at AGtM. Click here to see the extra-rare performers from season six.

A brief summary of what went down in this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, “Like Gene for Chocolate.” After a poor performance when presenting a school project, Gene turned to his favorite chocolate, Chunky Blast Offs, only to find out that the company changed the branding and favor! This is outrageous and Gene does the one thing we all have done, sending a strongly worded email to the company. Also like all of us, Gene did not get the answer he was looking for. So now it is time to take things to the next level and pay a visit to the candy company (who just happens to be located near by) to try to talk some sense into them.

Meanwhile we learn about a little hobby that Teddy has. Teddy recovers the lost golf balls from a local course and then sells them back to the club. Teddy has run out of balls and is looking to break into the holy grail – the bottom of the pond! Teddy enlists the assistance of Bob to hold the hose that Teddy can use for air while diving to the deeps of the golf course pond. Teddy and Bob score a ton of balls but have to escape the security guard! They lose some balls but still get enough for Teddy to sell back!

So the first plan to get to the big wigs at the candy company – take the factory tour and just meet someone important – did not work out but on the second time around Gene finds Ferdie, technically the owner, who is totally down with Gene’s request. The problem is when you look at Ferdie you are kind of looking at a future Gene – someone who never finishes anything. But Gene won’t be that Gene this time! After getting into a disagreement with Ferdie, Gene with the help of his sisters, goes undercover and breaks into the Board of Directors meeting!

Gene rocked the Board of Directors meeting and reminded everyone that candy is about remembering what you loved as a child. Though the board was down with changing Chunky Blast Offs back it would literally cost them millions so it was a no go! But, Gene did end up get all the left over Chunky Blast Offs from before the rebranding so that is kind of a win!

And now, the Extra-Rare Performer of the Week is: Gene the Closer

It has been awhile since we got a Gene Belcher episode of Bob’s Burgers. Gene may suffer from the worst case if middle child syndrome – because I mean his two sisters are pretty freaking awesome – and Gene really does not get enough credit. Gene always…I mean always…has some of the best one liners of every episode and I think we all need to listen to him a wee bit more. Okay, end of rant.

All the Belchers have such a abundance of positive passion for the important things in their lives. For Gene, at least this week, his passion is for his favorite go-to chocolate is what drives the whole Belcher family – well minus Bob but he was busy. Gene’s mission to restore his favorite chocolate to its original form is not because he is scared of change but because he believes we should all hold onto our childhoods. Also, YAY to Gene showing his sisters that he can finish something.

Until next time, stay fresh Bob’s Burgers fans!
