Let’s push play on Edgar Wright’s new film Baby Driver

My love for Edgar Wright is strong and true, the truth is that Wright has been a huge influence on my work. So of course I am counting down the days to the release of Baby Driver and cursing the people attending SXSW who got to see the premiere last night.

Wright last film to hit the big screen was the 2013 The World’s End which was the conclusion of the Cornetto Trilogy starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. So basically we are over due for a new Wright film and Baby Driver is departure from the Cornetto Trilogy but still has classic Wright elements. After the SXSW premiere the official trailer for the slated August release hit the interwebs. Check out the trailer below…

An international trailer was also released which is a wee bit different and showcases some additional clips a plot points…

Now let’s get official with the synopsis:

A talented, young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.

And now here is the badass poster for the film:

So it would seem that Baby Driver is mixing several cinematic genres into one film. We got a action, stunt driving, star-crossed lover romance, comedy, musical, and of course classic heist film with the fast beats and colorful comicbook effects and tones that we have seen throughout Wright’s past work.

Baby Driver will hit theaters this August!
