We are officially less than a month away from Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast and of course everyone here at AGtM cannot wait!
The world premieres and press tour are coming to an end and now the public has learned that the first openly gay character for Disney will make it’s debut in the film.
Josh Gad, who plays LeFou, is ‘very proud’ to play the gay character:
Bill Condon did an amazing job of giving us an opportunity to create a version of LeFou that isn’t like the original, that expands on what the original did, but that makes him more human and makes him a wonderfully complex character to some extent.
BatB director, Bill Condon, had this to say about LeFou:
I keep saying it’s more like the first gay moment, because I think he’s a very fluid character. You want to translate [their relationship] into something that feels real, and you can’t help but wonder, in his admiration for Gaston, there’s something more going on … I just love the way [Gad] kind of captures that.
So while most of the world is celebrating this amazing news, of course their are some a$$holes that are now banning the film from screening at their theater because of LeFou’s sexual preference. No surprise that the government of Russia is considering banning the film after it is reviewed by the culture minister Vladimir Medinsky to see if the film has “elements of propaganda of homosexuality.”
Yes this is 2016, we are FINALLY getting our first openly Disney gay character — who would have thought it would take this long — and sure Russia banning the film isn’t too shocking but it also seems like a theater in Alabama will also not be playing the film stating: “If I can’t sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me, then we have no business showing it.”
Well it is your loss Russia and Alabama because LOVE ALWAYS WINS in the end!
Beauty and the Beast will hit theaters March 17th!
