Monica: I’ll be the first one to admit that when I heard Spider-Man was being rebooted yet again, I wasn’t thrilled. But Tom Holland’s appearance in Civil War and this trailer have me totally onboard! Thank goodness, Marvel took this property back! There wasn’t a second of the trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming that I didn’t love. It was perfect and I feel like the movie will exceed that perfection. Enough gushing, let me talk about what’s actually IN the trailer.
The “Avengers” cameo is hilarious. And Peter’s quips are perfect when dealing with them. Hulk gave it away, haha! His interactions with Tony Stark are actually really sweet. Stark may be a mentor but I kind of get the feeling Peter makes him realize what having a son would be like. Zendaya might not be the apple of Peter’s eye in this movie but she seems like she’s the friend that will give Peter shit when he deserves it. Peter actually has his eyes set on Liz Allan, which let’s use this moment to give a shout out to the diversity of this New York high school! Now I know we were all upset that Marvel didn’t go with a non-white Spidey but they did seem to make sure Peter’s world was not filled with all white kids and that the love interest is a Black girl. And she isn’t just some passing moment in the trailer as she’s shown quite a few times especially when the Vulture threatens the people Peter loves. Kudos to starting to portray a diverse universe!
One of the things I always loved about Peter Parker was that he was a super nerd. And Marvel is making sure to stick to that. I just feel bad for his friend Ned who drops what seems to be the Death Star Lego. That will take forever to rebuild.
The Spider-wings on his suit are cool. Also, his little Spider-button that makes taking the outfit off super easy. And way to top that train scene from the McGuire-era! Peter has to keep an entire ship together that’s out on the water! Holy moly.
Now before I pass over to Kait, let me throw out that Donald Glover, Martin Starr, and Hannibal Burress are listed on the IMDb page! Yes to all of them.
Kait: I would be lying to you if I said prior to this trailer I was super excited for Spider-Man: Homecoming. It just seems that Spider-Man cannot stop being rebooted and fans are just waiting till someone out there gets it right (I will admit – I was a fan of Toby’s Spider-Man). Even after his intro in Civil War, I was still on the fence but not anymore.
There are three factors that I believe are making fans swoon for the new superhero film. First, the one we all are thankful for, Spider-Man’s homecoming to Marvel Studios. Say what you want but Marvel knows how to make a damn superhero film – and yes I am completely biased as a hardcore Marvel fan who pretty much loves 99.9% of everything they do. Spider-Man in the MCU just makes sense and the studio is able to actually breath fresh reboot air into the franchise.
The second factor is the fact that the film is NOT an origin story. I don’t think I could watch the death of Uncle Ben…again. The kid is Spider-Man, he fought in Civil War, he knows Tony Stark, and he goes to high school. Let’s get onto the story, please!
And the third factor is the casting and development of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Tom Holland is the perfect Spider-Man! I think sometimes we, as well as studios, forget that Peter is a real life teenage boy who wants to save the world and get the girl. Huge bonus, Holland actually looks like a teenage boy! Creating two personas, Peter and Spidey, is hard but as you watch the trailer you can tell there are different levels to the character. Also, hello this is supposed to be fun – and Marvel films are fun! That opening bit in the trailer, so f*!king cute – I LOVE it so very much.
Though I will be Team Cap for life watching Tony Stark mentor Peter is a joy and a refreshing take on a character that we still kind of hate cause remember he locked up a lot of his friends including taking Hawkeye away from his family…not cool Tony!
So my only complaint and it is not like really a complaint but more of an annoying observation, is Hollywood now just typecasting Michael Keaton?
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters July 7, 2017.
