Hopefully, these are just rumors from The Mirror or generated rumors from BBC head honchos themselves to generate buzz but BBC wants a “clean slate” for series 11. Chris Chibnall is taking over the reigns as showrunner so a change is coming but The Mirror’s source is saying the following:
“BBC management wants a return to the format from the David Tennant era, when you had a dashing male lead and young female companion.”
Now you might be thinking that Pearl Mackie is a young female companion! What are they talking about? Apparently, Mackie only signed a one-year contract. This doesn’t mean she’ll be booted after a year but it definitely makes it sound like her popularity with fans could make or break her run on the show and a potential for more series. From what I’ve seen on the internet, fans already seem to fancy her and she strikes me as pretty damn charming from the teasers Doctor Who posts on their social media channels. Please don’t Martha her! I still don’t understand why fans never got attached to Martha. She was pretty awesome in my damn opinion.
This rumor also seems to be a smack in the face of Peter Capaldi, the actor that brought the show back to the enigmatic Doctor rather than the dashing male lead. No offense to Capaldi! When it was announced that he would become the new Doctor, sites everywhere deemed fake Doctor Who fans would leave the show in the dust because the lead wasn’t some hot young actor. But fans stayed true to their love of the Doctor, no matter what form the alien took. Although, a lot of fans are still holding out for a non-White male Doctor.
This is all supposedly based on slumping merchandise sales. No surprise that money is the motivator. I’ll admit that even I don’t rush to buy Doctor Who merchandise anymore but I haven’t been hooked on the show for awhile. Shows have their slumps, it happens. And it doesn’t help that the stories lately have been lacking the magic that had a new generation become enraptured with the show.
Once again, I hope this is nothing but a stupid rumor.
