The Underwritten Female Characters Are Saving Ladies, One Female Trope at a Time

Nuclear Family knocked it out of the park with their latest video! Bree Essrig plays Lola, the quintessential Manic Pixie Dream Girl. After her boyfriend breaks up with her to find a sensible lawyer, she’s taken in by a group of renegade agents known as the Underwritten Female Characters who train her to be more than just a throwaway character. Lola has to pass a series of female trope tests including the Bechdel test, which not surprisingly, a lot of content fails.

This video is sadly only 3 minutes. I wish it was longer or even a series because it’s a strong case for how poorly female characters are still written. This isn’t me saying all female characters are horrible, just that compared to the roles men get, it is still severely lacking even though it is 2016.

Kudos to Bree Essrig, Ana Cheri, Shanna Malcolm, Ceciley Jenkins, Jenny Yang, and everyone else at Nuclear Family involved with this production! And f**k the haters already bitching about this trailer!
