SyFy Picks Up ‘Primeval: New World’
Just when we thought the SyFy channel had given up on green lighting original scripted shows, the news broke this morning that the cable net has purchased the US distribution rights to Primeval: New World. The scifi drama series is a Canadian spin-off of the original British show, and was purchased as part of a deal with distributor Entertainment One (who represent a number of SyFy’s series).
The show will consist of 13 episodes (at least for the first year), and will combine characters from the British show with new, original characters. Niall Matter (Eureka), Sarah Channing (Vampire Diaries), and Danny Rahim will star as a team of animal experts and scientists who are studying paranormal events while battling prehistoric and futuristic creatures. It will be set in Vancouver, with emphasis placed on the Pacific Northwest locale.
According to THR, SyFy vet Amanda Tapping is set to direct several episodes.
No word yet on when it will premiere in the US, but it is set to bow on SPACE in Canada in November.
