Hell Yeah Vol. 1 Kicks Its Way Onto Shelves This Week
Hell Yeah Vol. 1 hits shelves this Wednesday and it is a treat for anyone who is a fan of Watchmen and Kick-Ass. Sure it isn’t up to the same bar as the infamous comics but it is a fun story with interesting characters that could eventually hit top comic levels.
Any comic that involves a woman that can turn into a T-Rex gets good marks in my book though.
The story that sprung from writer Joe Keatinge’s mind is about the first generation that grows up in the world of superheroes. Benjamin Day is the protagonist/anti-hero in this story that gets some fame from his father being the marine that first made contact with the superheroes. Ben is cocky and so far his only powers seem to be strength, which is good but remember there is a girl that can turn into a T-freaking-Rex! Dinosaur powers trump any other powers. There is no fighting me on this.
Anyway, Ben’s world gets turned upside down when he finds out someone is going around and killing versions of himself in other worlds. This spurns him into making sure he isn’t the next one to be knocked off in some gruesome manner. Nobody wants to be shot through with a laser or have his or her head knocked off.
Illustrator Andre Szymanowics and colorist Jason Lewis created a world that reminds me of Spider-Man intertwining with the chunky deaths seen in The Manhattan Project. But I think my favorite part of their work was the variations of Benjamin Day all having their own quirk about them rather than looking like carbon copies.
If you want some kick ass action, a mysterious story, and superheroes pick up this volume of Hell Yeah that collects issues 1-5 by Image Comics.
