‘Face Off’ Premiere Takes on ‘Star Wars’

Last night’s premiere of SyFy’s hit competition show Face Off had it’s fair share of dramatic turns, including an elimination round that never happened, but more on that later. The reality program kicked off their third season with a rooftop party hosted by Sean Astin, and a spotlight challenge that had the artists competing for a spot in the Star Wars universe.

This year’s competitors are the usual group of 12 very different makeup artists, ranging in age from 20 to 46, with experience ranging from new graduates, to hobbyists, to effects makeup veterans. Yesterday’s show teamed everyone up into six teams of two, with predictably varied results.

Coming out on top were, of course, the two teams that worked best together. Veteran makeup designers Rod and Roy for their ambitious tiny alien in a giant mech suit, and self proclaimed Star Wars geeks Sarah and Laura for their elegantly executed female bounty hunter. In the end, the judges decided to reward ambition over theme, and Rod and Roy took home the top prize: their creation on theStar Warswebsite and incorporated into the extended universe. Rod was eventually named the overall winner of the first week.

While the fantastic and impressive are what the judges, and the contestants, are there for, there wouldn’t be a show without drama, and this week it came in the form of Joe, and his inability to get along with his partner, Tommy. I’ll admit, I was a little worried for Tommy after he broke one of the cardinal rules of the judging procedure – don’t talk first – and decided to preemptively beg for forgiveness from the judges, which did not amuse the experts, and put him in serious danger. As luck would have it though, Joe decided to do the panel’s work for them, and took off during deliberations, effectively disqualifying himself from the show, and saving Tommy’s ass in the process.

Next week the contestants take on the challenge to create the perfect pirate, and with $5,000 on the line, the question is: who will get the booty, and who will walk the plank?

Check out all of this weeks looks over at SyFy.com, and let us know what you think of this year’s contestants in the comments.

Tommy did get pretty lucky that Joe eliminated himself huh? I think if I were a judge, and the first words out of contestant’s mouth were throwing their team mate under the bus, I’d probably get rid of them! Thinking about it though, maybe I would have run away too if I were responsible for such a terrible creature, lol! As far as all the other contestants go, I can honestly say I was impressed! This is my first time watching this show too, after hearing a recommendation from a coworker of mine at Dish, so I’m excited to see where the rest of the season goes. I did watch a few episodes from last season on Dishonline.com earlier today, and honestly I think this season is much better so far, even based on the two episodes I’ve watched. I think it’s awesome that the viewers will have a say in the winner this season too! :)

I don’t think I would have eliminated him just for trying to defend himself, but he definitely would have to seriously impress the crap out of me for the rest of the season because of it. He really should have waited for the assessment, and then graciously accepted the criticism. I get that it’s hard when your future rides on someone else, but still.

So far I’m enjoying this season. The contestants seem much more likely to help each other out when they get into a jam, which is refreshing. I am not, however, super thrilled about the audience participation bit. In competition shows like this, I think it matters more when the professionals make the decisions. The American people tend to make things a popularity contest, less than a test of skill and talent.

Thanks for commenting! Let me know how you enjoy the rest of the season.
